Evidence-Guided Decipherment
“What could this broken line have said?”
A few surviving signs from a language no one can fully read.
The intended experience
A fragment preserves something and withholds something. This research asks how competing readings can be weighed against the surviving evidence, and what further evidence would distinguish them.
How it unfolds
- GatheredThe signs that survive, and clues already verified elsewhere. Words known from other texts; what is known of how the language works.
- WeighedSeveral readings, side by side. Each reading carries the observations that support it, the difficulties it encounters, and the assumptions on which it depends.
- MadeAn interpretation whose reasoning can be examined, with the surviving evidence, proposed reconstruction and remaining uncertainty kept distinct.
- PossibilityA new clue may discriminate between readings—or reveal that the alternatives were too narrow. The inquiry remains open to revision as the evidence changes.
